EXPERIMENTAL MULTIFACTOR RESEARCH ON FACTORS INFLUENCING THE AVAILABLE FRICTION FORCES BETWEEN TYRES AND WET ROAD SURFACES. THIRD PHASE: TYRES FOR LORRIES

EXPERIMENTEEL MULTIFACTOR ONDERZOEK NAAR FACTOREN DIE DE BESCHIKBARE WRIJVINGSKRACHTEN TUSSEN BANDEN EN NATTE WEGDEKKEN BEINVLOEDEN. DERDE FASE: VRACHTAUTOBANDEN

An experimental multifactor research is set up to monitor the friction forces between the road and the tyre. The third phase of the research concerns tyres for lorries. Experience gained with the measurement of coefficients of friction with these tyres is described, and the maximum braking force coefficient and the braking force coefficient of the locked wheel were used as evaluation criteria. It is shown that tyres for lorries have significantly lower braking force coefficients than car tyres; sometimes up to fifty percent. The micro roughness of the road surface influences the braking force coefficient in a very important way. A minimum level of micro roughness for road surfaces is recommended. (TRRL)
