AIR, NOISE IN THE STREET-ENVIRONMENTS. VAENERSBORG CENTRE 1979

LUFT, BULLER I GATUMILJOEN. VAENERSBORG CENTRUM 1979

A draft of plan, for the city centre of Vaenersborg, Sweden (population 35000) is in course of preparation. In connection with this, the situation of air pollution caused by exhaust fumes has been mapped out by measurements and theoretical calculations. The measurements included the contents of carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbon and lead, at a permanent measuring-station placed at the biggest shopping street. Even the contents of aromatic hydrocarbons have been determined. Finally, calculations have been made on the contents of carbon monoxide and nitric dioxide in different street-environments at the present situation and for five future traffic alternatives. The results of the measurements and the calculations show that it is very urgent to relieve the busiest streets and reduce the traffic flow. This is made by turning the shopping street into a pedestrian street. (TRRL)
