ROAD CLOSURE DURING THE THAW - GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

BARRIERES DE DEGEL - INSTRUCTION GENERALE

This specification replaces the one recommended by the circular of 15th November 1973. Following a definition of the very severe and ordinary winters, the specification puts forward the lines of action to be taken for the protection of the highway network and restrictions on traffic. In the second part information is given regarding the setting up of tables for classifying routes for ordinary winter conditions. The third part deals with technical factors regarding decisions on road closures. The fourth part discusses the basis and the application of a rational policy regarding road closures. The fifth part is devoted to the organisation of road closures and to the dissemination of information. The final part covers the enforcement of stipulated measures and signalisation, with palliative measures intended (depending on the gravity of the situation) to reduce the consequences of road closures on the national economy, of the transport of large loads and vehicles equipped with studded tyres.
