THE VEHICLE AS A PLACE OF WORK

DAS KRAFTFAHRZEUG ALS ARBEITSPLATZ

According to North Rhine/Westfalia statistics, 4 percent of all working places are in vehicles. The report highlights the particular dangers of the vehicle as a workplace, for example the higher risk of heart attack and illnesses due to noise, and the various tasks to be undertaken apart from driving the vehicle. By means of graphic illustrations the results of an analysis of the interaction of driver, vehicle and environmental conditions are presented. The following points are dealt with: driver cab, access and place conditions, seating and comfort, operation and control equipment, visibility, interior noise and ventilation, vehicle handling and safety. The main defective areas were the visibility to the side and rear and risk in accidents caused by hard or angled parts in the interior. Further research and development related to the ergonomics of the driving area and cab is needed. (TRRL)
