CALCULATION OF FOUNDATIONS SUBJECTED TO HORIZONTAL FORCES USING PRESSUREMETER DATA

A general method for flexible piles is developed, and methods of analysis for rigid or semi-flexible foundations are described. Experimental results are included. The calculation of the horizontal modulus of reaction from pressuremeter parameters is described, and the choosing of the method of analysis is discussed. Non homogeneous soil, the influence of critical depth, and pile groups are also discussed. Appendices cover stresses and deformation in short rigid piles subjected to horizontal forces, and stresses and deformations in relatively rigid or semi flexible piles subjected to horizontal forces. Comparisons between the calculated values of parameters such as total displacement at top, maximum bending moment, elevation of this maximum bending moment and the observed ones show good agreement. However, the Menard pressuremeter test takes into account some remoulding effect on the soil around the measuring probe, it is suggested that the probe be emplaced as the foundation is constructed.
