The LCN method of airfield pavement testing and evaluation has been accepted as a standard method of testing by many countries including India. It is also listed as a standard method of testing in the ICAO Aerodrome Manual. The Soil Engineering and Material Testing Wing at College of Military Engineerng, Pune is engaged in the past few years in testing and evaluation of several airfields (civil/military) in India. On the basis of this experience this paper brings out the limitations of the standard method of testing, published by the Ministry of Public and Building Works, UK. Methods have been recommended to test and evaluate pavements, which deviate from the simple type of pavements enumerated in the standard method of testing. Recommendations have also been made to determine failure loads, to locate corners in case of rigid slabs having flexible overlays, to determine residual load transfers and to make corrections for the evaluated value of LCN to take into account worst subgrade conditions.
