THE LEGAL BASIS OF ROAD MARKINGS
GESETZLICHE GNUNDLAGENDER BEDENMARKIERUNG
Only in 1960 did the legislature approve the standardization of carriageway markings according to international usage. The conditions for road markings are contained in paragraph 55 of the STVO (road traffic act); their significance in guiding, securing and controlling traffic is laid down in various other statements within the act. Longitudinal and transverse markings, which represent a prohibition or an instruction, have to be laid as a solid line, whilst those which have a guiding or controlling function are shown as a broken line. Road markings for flowing traffic are yellow; white is for edge marking, side lines and pedestrian crossings and also for parking control. The highway authority can apply road markings without further authority, but they must be removed upon official instruction if they contravene the law or are materially incorrect. (TRRL)
