INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE WITH ROAD MARKINGS AND PROPOSALS

INTERNATIONALE ERFAHRUNGEN MIT BODENMARKIERUNGEN UND VORSCHLAEGE

The basis of international regulations concerning carriageway markings are contained in the "agreement on road traffic and road traffic signs" (Vienna, 1968), the European supplementary agreement (Geneva, 1971) and the protocol on markings to the European supplementary agreement (Geneva, 1973). These international rules have the effect of unifying national standards. At the present time an amendment to the 1954 code of practice for road markings as being undertaken in the Federal Republic of Germany. 1977 saw the publication of a specification for the selection, supply and execution of carriageway markings. The basic features of road markigns in the DDR and the USA are described and the criteria for testing (drying time, reflectivity and skid-resistance) and the requirements for maintenance agreements are explained.
