ANALYSIS OF OVERBRIDGES ON THE BASIS OF TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC, AESTHETIC AND OTHER FACTORS

The construction of modern roads is accompanied by the construction of corresponding road crossings - overbridges, greater attention should be paid to the planning, designing and construction of overbridges than has been the case in the past. Faulty planning for future traffic capacities during the building of the motorway through the SR Serbia (1959 to 1963) has necessitated the pulling down of certain overbridges because their spans could not accommodate the four-lane motorway which is now under construction. On the basis of experiences so far, the author considers that overbridges should be divided into two basic groups in respect of their duration: (a) permanent overbridges, having a width equal to the width of the traffic route which they cross; and (b) temporary overbridges, having a width equal to the width of the traffic route which they cross. The problem of aesthetics in bridges is a frequent subject of discussion between experts in the field of bridge building. The author considers that typifying of bridges does not produce a favourable result from an aesthetic viewpoint and that, in order to break the monotony, it is necessary to introduce new designs. For the reason stated in the text it is considered that the height of clearance of 5.00 metres should be accepted for overbridges. (TRRL)
