STATIC MODULUS OF GAULT CLAY PREDICTED FROM SEISMIC TESTS
In order to predict immediate "elastic" deformation of soil, it is necessary to determine the appropriate elastic moduli. As traditional methods are lengthy and expensive, seismic methods are often considered. Such a seismic investigation was carried out on a site of over-consolidated gault clay used for pressuremeter tests, so that results could be compared. A numerical method is presented for evaluating the general distribution of dynamic modulus with depth from seismic results. A vertical profile of shear modulus was generated which was converted into equivalent values for the pressuremeter tests using results of independent resonant column investigations. It is concluded that seismic tests can be used to evaluate elastic soil constants which compare favourably with values from pressuremeter tests. (TRRL)
