IMPROVEMENTS TO ROAD SAFETY USING ROAD TRAFFIC/MEDICAL PREVENTION METHODS

MEHR SICHERHEIT IM STRASSENVERKEHR DURCH VERKEHRSMEDIZINISCHE PRAEVENTION

Preventive measures with particular application to use on the roads are aimed at improved road safety. One of the objectives of road traffic/medical preventive measures is to pick out unsuitable drivers. In this paper the structure and method of operation of The Medico-Psychological Institute of Technical supervision (of Federal Germany) is described. The institute carries out investigations for reporting on the physical and mental suitability for driving of driver licence applicants and holders. The research establishment emphasizes the principle of team work between engineers, doctors, psychologists and teachers. Initially where deficiencies are evident the specialists attempt to find conditions under which the subject can still perform as a driver. If these deficiencies prove to be incapable of compensation, then the governing authority has to be recommended to refuse a driving licence. It is required that a diagnosis which results in a person being considered unfit for driving is proved not only in one but in several research stations (symptomatic multi-assurance). In addition to these specialist reports on driving suitability numerous research and development work has been completed in past years, which deals with important traffic/medical preventive measures. Among others the following reports were prepared: "a vision test for driving licence applicants", "visual ability and road traffic", "illness and road traffic". (TRRL)
