The workshop was held in Salzburg, Austria, on 9th and 10th March 1979. A survey of the development of traffic medicine in Austria was presented by Loitzl, E; the achievements of traffic psychology were outlined by Hoefner, KK; Prosenz, P discussed the area of traffic medicine and Schuetzenhoefer, A reported on the future tasks of traffic psychology. The discussion centred on the extent to which traffic medicine and psychology could work together. The most urgent problems relating to traffic safety work were discussed in three working groups, and proposals for solving these problems put forward by doctors and psychologists. Working group 1 was concerned with education on a wider basis to achieve greater safety consciousness in the population; the effects of fatigue, and the interaction of illness and drugs and bodily reactions on stress, and the better definition and more accurate study of driving aptitude by doctors and psychologists. Working group 2 was concerned with the documentation of medical literature, the supplementing of information on accidents, and the setting up of accident documentation, and with interdisciplinary cooperation in driving aptitude tests, safety equipment in cars, rehabilitation of road users involved in accidents, and the greater prevention of accidents to children, adolescents and old people. Working group 3 was concerned with the extension of work with the public setting up of central documentation, creation of an institute and cooperation between various bodies. (TRRL)
