A number of vehicles have been tested concerning their exhaust emission. There were two kinds of tests: complete test and hot test. In the complete test vehicles of models 1971-1975 were tested according to TSV's (Road Safety Office) instructions F23 - 1969 and vehicles of model 1976 were tested according to TSV's instructions F40 - 1974. Measurement of the concentrations of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon was carried out directly after the complete test. In the hot test all the engines have been run hot before the test. The test is similar to the complete test. There are also two kinds of investigations. In the mapping investigation 504 vehicles were tested and 60 of these were tested both through a complete test and a hot test. The other 444 vehicles were tested through hot test. Of the 60 vehicles 37 were of model 1971 and of this model 68 per cent exceeded the limits of F23 - 1969. The results of the 444 vehicles showed similar tendencies. In the supervisory control (concerning relatively new vehicles) 379 vehicles of model 1975 and 647 of model 1976 were tested. 28 per cent of the vehicles of model 1975 exceeded one or more of the limits of F23 - 1969 and 59 per cent of model 1976 exceeded one or more of the limits of F40 - 1974 which has considerably lower limits than F23 - 1969. Diagrams of the emissions of carbon monoxides, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from different makes are shown in this report. (TRRL)
