ASPHALTS EMULSIONS AND THEIR USES
LA EMULSION ASFALTICA Y SUS APLICACIONES
Asphalt emulsions are particularly suited to use as hydrocarbon binders in highway construction. In this way, a pure asphalt can be used in liquid form and at ambient temperature. If the emulsion is of the cationic type, it can be applied to wet surfaces without losing its adhesive qualitites. Because formulas for asphalt emulsions are adaptable, they are especially suitable for resurfacing, cold-mix paving, gravel emulsions, and slurry seals. Emulsion properties allow work to be carried out under difficult climatic conditions that would be unacceptable using conventional binders. From an energy viewpoint, the use of asphalt emulsions results in substantial savings. They also represent a simple solution to the air pollution problem that occurs when using traditional hydrocarbon binders for highway construction. (Author)
