CAR POOLING IN PRIVATE VEHICLES. INVESTIGATION OF COMMUTING PATTERN AT THE VOLVO FACTORY PLANT IN OLOFSTROEM, SPRING 1978

SAMAAKNING I PRIVATA FORDON. UNDERSOEKNING AV PENDLINGSMOENSTRET VID VOLVO OLOFSTROEMSVERKEN VAAREN 1978

This report presents a survey of journeys to work (March 1978) at the Volvo industry in Olofstroem, southern Sweden (population 15000). The aim was to provide a basis for improving the efficiency of the working trips. A questionnaire was distributed to the employees (3900) and a traffic count was carried out. 81,5% of the employees answered the questionnaire. The questionnaire and the traffic count corresponded well: car occupancy was according to the questionnaire 1,34 and according to traffic count 1,42. This could be compared with the Swedish average of 1,25. The questionnaire showed that 21% drive alone, 21% are car poolers, 19% travel by bus and 38% are pedestrians, cyclists or moped riders. The cars consume 550000 litres of petrol per year and the energy consumption of car and bus travellers is 6,81 million kwh per year or 1700 kwh per employee and year. The degree of car pooling is already high and explains the low increase of car poolers. The employees live in a very widespread area, which indicates that those who have the possibility of car pooling already use it. Car ownership among the employees is high. Only 10% belong to households not owning a car. The average journey length for single drivers is 11,4 km, car poolers 15,4 km, bus passengers 18,8 km and others 3,2 km. This results in a total average journey length of 10,5 km (one-way trip). (TRRL)
