Design of ballasted railway track foundations using numerical modelling. Part I: Development

This article is the first of a two-part article on a new method of designing ballasted foundations for railway tracks. The method avoids shear failure of the subgrade of the track and excessive plastic deformation of the substructure, while supporting high-speed trains and trains with heavy loads. This article describes how the design method was developed. Part two of the article discusses the application of the design method.
