EVALUATION OF WOODY PLANTS AND DEVELOPMENT OF ESTABLISHMENT PROCEDURES FOR DIRECT WOODY SEEDING AND/OR VEGETATIVE REPRODUCTION. EXPANDED EXECUTIVE SUMMARY REPORT
Literature reviews were made to prepare a list of 56 woody species to be evaluated. These species were evaluated in row seedings, row plantings, and large plots for ease of establishment, survival, and growth. Eight species are recommended for seeding. Hydroseeding has been the most successful method of establishment. Recommendations for establishment are presented. Successful row seedings were made with a direct mechanical seeder. A study of roadside succession on Maryland highway sites was made. Flowering forbs for roadside use were investigated. Time did not allow a comprehensive investigation. No recommendations are made. Testing of mulches, herbicides, rodent repellent, various pellet mediums, and plants grown in commercial peat pellets was a part of this project. (FHWA)
