Countermeasures Prove Effective in Reducing Bicycle Collisions

This article describes the action plan of the City of La Quinta, CA, USA (population 41,000) to reduce bicycle crashes on publicly maintained streets. La Quinta has been preparing Annual Traffic Safety Reports (ATSRs) each year since 2006. The reports use CrossroadsTM software to identify intersections with the highest number of intersection crashes; road segments with the highest number of mid-block crashes; the locations of all pedestrian crashes and bicycle crashes; and the locations of all single vehicle crashes, night time crashes and crashes involving parked vehicles. There was a sharp decline in the number of bicycle crashes in 2016–2017 during a period of time when traffic volumes were increasing along many of the major traffic corridors in the city, and the numbers of fatal and injury crashes throughout the United States were increasing significantly.
