Smart Traffic to Improve Standard of Living, Transport Economics and Environmental Effects - Case Finland

Habits related to using the transport system have already changed radically in the recent past, and the predictable change within the near future is still vast. Smart traffic helps public and private transport suppliers to offer a better level of service more economically in people and goods transport, and traffic system users in finding existing services. This paper discusses utilizing smart traffic applications to enable the existing transport infrastructure to accommodate the transport demand of today, improving the situation for both the end user as well as the social transport system. A case example of the developments in Finland is presented. Transport needs and costs are a major component of Finland’s competitiveness, and the nation has turned to smart traffic to aid to solve its problems. Finland is among the first countries with a documented and committed smart traffic strategy. The second release of the strategy has been published in 2013 to promote smart traffic innovations and business opportunities. Smart traffic applications, using existing technology, not only improve the level of service met by the transport system user and boost the efficiency of the system, but also minimize environmental effects. With a more efficient usage of infrastructure, investment levels can be lower.
