Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for Public Transport in India; Case Study - Jaipur, Rajasthan

Public transport is the hallmark of a good transportation system for a city, especially in reducing the use of personalized transport, travel time, accidents and pollution. There is thus an urgent need to promote city buses in order to contain the critical issues of safety and security of commuters. Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technologies for service deployment on city buses include technologies such as GPS, CCTV cameras, Passenger Information Systems, in-vehicle audio system, and on-board ticketing machines. They also include a Traffic Management Centre to control the inter-related workings of all the components so as to operate and manage the system economically. They provide benefits such as reduced waiting time, increased accessibility of the system and safety of users, reduced fuel consumption and operational costs, as well as reducing traffic congestion, and improving traffic flow and economic productivity. In this paper the authors intend to improve a city bus system as public transport by considering the steps taken by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India (GoI) to initiate ITS for city buses in India. A case study of Jaipur to provide innovative services using ITS to enhance the efficiency of a city bus service and benefit passengers, operators, and public transport authorities is also detailed.
