Road Management and Operations Services Supported by ITS - The Experience of ANAS S.P.A. (The Italian National Road Authority)

The systematic and gradual adoption of modern information and communication technologies to improve safety, efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability of the entire Italian road and motorway network represents a tremendous opportunity for the Italian National Road Authority (ANAS) and the country as a whole for the next decade. In this context, ANAS has developed and rolled out a new ITS system, named ANAS Road Management Tool (ANAS RMT), with the goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of road network management through the use of modern technologies. ANAS RMT has been designed and implemented on the basis of a simple and essential concept: integrating heterogeneous field systems in a unique system with a core database. This is accomplished by allowing data detected by each apparatus or peripheral system to be used in a transversal way, not only for the pure technical management of road infrastructure, but also as an essential basis for the implementation and development of the operational procedures for road management (considering both an ordinary road network status and/or a perturbed one). The whole initiative represents the ANAS enhanced response to the current needs for each road agency to increase ITS utilization for Road Network Management.
