Implementation and Evaluation of an Emergency Vehicle Signal Preemption System in Korea

When fires or some other emergency event happens, the arrival time of emergency vehicles has a great influence on the survival rate. Under these circumstances, the signalized intersection is one of the biggest obstacles for the emergency vehicles’ travel. The Emergency Vehicle Signal Preemption System, which has already been adopted by some countries such as Japan and USA, needs to be implemented in Korea. The research aims to develop and implement an operations strategy for a city where the Emergency Vehicle Signal Preemption System is suitable for use in Korea, then evaluate the effectiveness of the system by conducting a field test and simulation analysis. As a result, the dispatch time of emergency vehicle is improved due to the Emergency Vehicle Signal Preemption System in a field test and simulation analysis. In the future, it can be a fundamental research for application of the Emergency Vehicle Signal Preemption System in Korea.
