Revision of the Competency Standards for Occupational Therapy Driver Assessors: An overview of the evidence for the inclusion of cognitive and perceptual assessments within fitness-to-drive evaluations

Australia is currently revising its competency standards for use by occupational therapists when assessing fitness to drive. This research review examined cognitive and perceptual assessments included in driving evaluations of drivers after an illness or injury. Fourteen systematic reviews covering 271 individual studies were examined and the findings support the inclusion of cognitive and perceptual assessments. The research supports the inclusion of executive function, processing speed, visuospatial skills, attention, memory, and mental flexibility in fitness to drive evaluations conducted by occupational therapists.
