SERVICE AREAS AND THE HOTEL INDUSTRY
AREAS DE SERVICIO Y HOSTELERIA
A study is presented of the characteristics of service areas alongside highways and motorways, either toll or ordinary motorways, emphasizing the facilities they offer as regards restaurant and hotel facilities. Mention is made of the main differences between motorway service areas and the rest areas and motels along conventional roads. The advantages and disadvantages of installations such as "bridge-type" restaurants, integral overpass-type restaurants, restaurant-snack-bar complex, one-storey mini-bars, automatic bars, "take-away" establishments, self-services, "fast-food" establishments, proper hotels, motels, mini-motels. Mention is made of the signalization of service areas and of their ancillary equipment. The influence of the type of facility on patronage is discussed. (TRRL)
