INCREASED TRUCK SIZE AND WEIGHT ON U.S. HIGHWAYS

The purpose of this discussion paper is to define the major issues and important factors involved in a uniform national truck size and weight standard. Chapter 2 discusses some of the characteristics of the present system, including size, weight, and user charges; Chapter 3: Improvements to the productivity of trucking; Chapter 4: Highway maintenance considerations; Chapter 5: Some quick "back-of-envelope" calculations of the energy balance concerns; Chapters 6 and 7: Discussions of safety, enforcement, and transfer of benefits. Chapter 8: Other issues, principally rail/truck competition concerns. In Chapter 9 a concept that could enhance truck operations, energy savings, and enforcement is proposed. (Author)
