System on Road Transport Analysis by Probe Data and its Application

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) promotes the ETC 2.0 initiative. In April 2011, the MLIT began collecting data using a second-generation Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC) comprised of two parts, a vehicle-mounted sensor (the on-board equipment (OBE)) and a probe mounted along the roadway (the roadside unit (RSU)). The collected data include vehicle geo-position, time, and acceleration. This system is referred to as ETC 2.0 and the data as ETC 2.0 probe data. This study will discuss the characteristics of the ETC 2.0 probe data and the methods for using the data, and will also present some cases of analysis using these data.
