Lighter Than LRT

This article explores the return of the streetcar to North America's rail transit landscape. The author describes the early years of the modern streetcar era, which started in Portland, Oregon and continued with the addition of new vehicles in Tucson, Arizona and Washington, D.C. He profiles the work of Brookville Equipment, a carbuilder whose innovative, off-wire capable Liberty Modern streetcars feature on-board Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and are now found across the U.S. in such cities as Dallas, Phoenix and Detroit. The article also profiles challenges being faced in Ontario, Canada, as delays and political controversy mark Bombardier's Flexity Freedom streetcar contract with the Toronto Transit Commission.
