Acceleration Rate, Change of Acceleration Rate, and Airbag Deployment
This article examines the factors that impact a vehicle's decision to deploy airbags. Each vehicle manufacturer has a unique and complex algorithm that determines airbag deployment; however, factors such as acceleration and jerk play an important role in the decision-making process, as do seatbelt and state of occupant sensors. The article explores these factors in detail and suggests that better understanding of crashes can contribute to useful recommendations on safety equipment use, function, and potential biomechanical benefit.
