CONSTRUCTION OF THE BUCARAMANGA-BARRANCABERMEJA ROAD. THE LIZAMA-BARRANCABERMEJA SECTION

CONSTRUCCION VIA BUCARAMANGA-BARRANCABERMEJA. TRAMO: LIZAMA-BARRANCABERMEJA

The construction of this 38 km long section gave rise to numerous problems caused by the high plasticity of the natural terrain, the extensive zone of swamps and the lack of suitable construction materials in neighbouring regions. The pavement was designed according to the CBR method with a 30 cm thick granular sub-base, a 10 cm roadbase stabilized with bitumen, and a 5 cm thick bituminous mixture surfacing designed according to the Marshall method. The main construction problems were the embankment stability. The embankments built with a highly plastic material during a dry period showed longitudinal cracks caused by capillary stress. The bituminous mixtures used behaved satisfactorily after 4 years service in spite of severe climatic conditions. (TRRL) 237469.
