The automatic structural location and determination of the longitudinal strength members of bulk carriers is examined. Some aspects which are discussed include the use of a structural mathematical model in determining the scantlings, to the requirements of Lloyds Register of Shipping, for any ship size and internal structural arrangement, and also the use of stiffener selection subroutines for rolled steel shipbuilding sections. The establishment of a deck structure to satisfy a particular standard of longitudinal strength is included in the design process and this too is discussed. By using the model, systematic parametric studies have been made for bulk carriers ranging in size from 20,000 to 80,000 t dw in order to investigate the longitudinal steel weight behavior. These results are given.
