Precast Concrete Inlay Strategy Takes Aim at Asphalt Pavement Failures

Three different support systems for precast concrete panels to be used for the repair of asphalt pavement were evaluated in this pilot project, which took place on Highway 400 between Highways 88 and 89 in the greater Toronto area. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) decided to use the innovative pilot program in the process, which was the first occasion to use precast concrete overlays as inlays to repair distressed asphalt pavements. This rehabilitation technique can be staged at night in order to avoid daytime road closures. The three support systems that were used on the test section were grade-supported, grout-supported, and asphalt-supported.
