TEST OF A QUARTER-SCALE REINFORCED CONCRETE VOIDED SLAB BRIDGE

This report describes a test of a quarter-scale reinforced concrete voided slab bridge under scaled abnormal (HB) loading. The slab had a void depth ratio of 0.786 which is very close to the practical upper limit. It was found that the slab behaved adequately at the working load, at which stage its behaviour could be predicted with reasonable accuracy by a shear stiff orthotropic plate analysis in which the flexural cross-stiffness (D sub 1) was ignored. The slab failed under a central concentrated vehicle loading, at a load factor of 3.68, by the formation of a mechanism which involved longitudinal shear/flexural yield lines and transverse hogging flexural yield lines.
