Implementing Relative Deflection of Adjacent Blocks in Model Calibration of Masonry Arch Bridges

A new idea for model updating of masonry arch bridges is presented, which employs relative displacement of adjacent masonry blocks (RDAMB). Applicability and accuracy of the proposed method is proved by a case study. The proposed method is of specific interest for bridges with tall piers, or those located in regions with harsh environments, since it is rather difficult to record the vertical deflection of such bridges with common deflection meters. It is proposed, in such cases, to use RDAMB instead of the vertical deflection of midspans and use it for the purpose of model verification. Proposed instrumentation also offers significant cost reduction while preserving data quality. Applicability of RDAMB for calibration of the finite-element model of the bridge is also investigated and compared to common methods.
