The Road to Zero: A Vision for Achieving Zero Roadway Deaths by 2050

This report discusses strategies for achieving zero roadway fatalities by 2050. It starts by looking at road fatality trends in the U.S., data includes: increases in deaths by road user type, 2011 to 2016; and proportion of roadway deaths relative to proportion of population (teens, men, people in rural areas). It also discusses the benefits of adopting the Safe System approach, successfully implemented in Sweden, to decrease crash death rates. Next, current vehicle and highway technological innovations are described along with future scenarios that highlight these technologies. Chapter three presents a future in which zero crash fatalities have been realized and discusses the funding, mindset, technology, local initiatives, data sharing, and security needs of the decades preceding 2050. The final chapter suggests recommended actions for stakeholders to lay the foundation for turning the zero fatalities vision into reality.
