Pedestrians First: Tools for a Walkable City

This document includes a tool used to measure features that promote walkability at the block/street level, neighborhood level, and metropolitan urban area/city level. Each level can be measured and assessed separately and allows for comparisons across demographic and geographic areas. At the street-level a checklist is provided of design solutions that facilitate walkability; at the neighborhood level, a data collection tool is provided for assessing walkability; and at the city level a database maintained by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) tracks and compares citywide walkability. The primary goal of this tool is to create a set of easily understood metrics. Policy recommendations are also included.
