Houston Community Converts Golf Course into Detention System, Natural Areas

A defunct golf course is proving to be advantageous in efforts to improve stormwater management in a master-planned community on the southeastern edge of Houston. Construction was scheduled to be completed in late 2017 on the first of five planned phases to convert the golf course into a series of flood-mitigation features, as well as wildlife habitat and recreational amenities. The project has been dubbed Exploration Green and will significantly improve the local area's ability to detain stormwater, in addition to providing greater access to natural areas. The project has already proved its worth, as the first phase was able to protect an estimated 200 homes from flooding during Hurricane Harvey. In its final phase, the project is expected to remove approximately 2,000 homes from the 100-year floodplain.
