Just around the corner: The future of U.S. public transportation

The history of transportation and public transportation is closely tied to demographic and development trends, transportation technology trends, and economic and governance trends. This article explores the future of U.S. public transportation in the context of three of its key goals: 1) to provide transportation that enables upward mobility and enhanced quality of life for those unable to provide their own mobility; 2) to provide a resource-efficient means of moving people; and 3) to stimulate economic development and influence land use. The author examines challenges and impacts associated with each of these goals, and suggests that change can create opportunities to have transportation options in the future that are better and have less negative impact on their environment.
