World's Longest Pedestrian Bridge Opens in Switzerland
Covering 494 meters across a mountainside in Switzerland, the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge opened in July 2017, measuring a mere 65 cm wide and establishing itself as the world's longest pedestrian bridge. Its light weight made construction relatively easy, and its open-grid decking and mesh sidewall fencing make it easy for pedestrians to catch monumental views of the Swiss Alps while crossing. The bridge runs along a hiking trail known as the Europaweg, which extends from the village of Grächen to the village of Zermatt, which is located at the base of the Matterhorn mountain. Details of the bridge's construction are presented here.
