New NCHRP Research Report: Quantifying the Effects of Preservation Treatments on Pavement Performance

Pavement preservation is in broad use across many state departments of transportation (DOTs), but the benefits of preservation activities are primarily anecdotal, highlighting the need for more accurate assessments. A new research report offers guidance on selecting and applying an appropriate set of performance measures for evaluating the effectiveness of pavement preservation. The research demonstrates the use of selected performance measures in conjunction with other data and develops models for incorporating preservation into pavement management decision making. This article includes a look at key concepts in pavement preservation; standardizing metrics; performance models that capture immediate effects of preservation treatments and approaches for capturing long-term effects; and support for decision making such as predicting the best timing for preservation treatment.
