Marine Transportation and the Environment: Trends and Issues

This article explores the environmental impacts of commercial marine transportation and emerging technologies and regulatory frameworks that can mitigate the effects of fleet operations. Topics covered include (1) Air pollution including controlling sulfur and using alternative fuels and liquefied natural gas to aid in meeting air quality concerns; (2) Changing trade routes including the impact of the possible melting of the Arctic ice cap, possible new shipping routes, expected traffic, and the need to protect biodiversity in new areas; (3) Vessel discharges and wastewater treatment options; and (4) Underwater sound and impact on aquatic life.
