Study on Oil Flow Up through Piston Ring Gaps

It is important to specify the paths of oil flow up for reduction of lubricating oil consumption (LOC) in reciprocating engines. In this study, transparent cylinder liner made of sapphire is used for observing the behavior of oil-flow-up. Oil film thickness and oil film velocity are measured with laser induced fluorescence (LIF) method and particle image velocimetry (PIV). As a result, it is determined the thickness of oil on the piston land and the velocity of oil flow through the piston ring gap. It is also found out that the accumulated oil on the top land is scattered over combustion chamber.
