The aim of this project is mainly to provide basic knowledge of safety on residential bus streets. The opening of the report comprises an inventory of residential bus streets in Sweden with respect to: (1) urban structure and location of exposed activities, (2) geometric design, permissible traffic, (3) accidents involving bus drivers. Accident rates on the bus streets are calculated and compared with corresponding values for bus and car traffic on streets with mixed traffic. The accidents are classified with respect to road user categories, environment and accident types. The report concludes that residential bus streets are relatively safe for unprotected road users, but there is room for improvements of simple nature. Intersections between bus streets and minor residential streets provide conflicts, which require very distinct priority rules. (TRRL)
