Elongation Property Improvement by Controlling Intermetallic Compound Crystallization of Alloy Made from Recycled Aluminum for High Pressure Die Casting Wheels

The authors developed recycled aluminum alloy for motorcycle wheels manufacturing using HPDC (High Pressure Die Casting). So far, virgin ingot aluminum has been used because the elongation property deterioration was an issue. In order to make the elongation property equivalent to the virgin ingot alloy, the optimum amount of manganese (Mn) at an appropriate solidification rate in HPDC was determined. The crystallization configuration of iron-based intermetallic compounds that affects the elongation property was controlled. As a result, 97% reduction of CO₂ emission in the material production was achieved with recycled alloy compared to virgin ingots.
