THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE, WITH PARTICULAR CONSIDERATION TO THE LOADING RATIOS PREDETERMINED BY TEMPERATURE AND TRAFFIC LOAD IN RESPECT OF CONCRETE ROAD SLABS

ZUR DAUERFESTIGKEIT VON BETON UNTER BESONDERER BERUECKSICHTIGUNG DER DURCH TEMPERATUR UND VERKEHRSLAST VORGEGEBENEN BEANSPRUCHUNGSVERHAELTNISSE BEI BETONFAHRBAHNPLATTEN

Tests were carried out on 15/15/70 cm beams to determine the fatigue strength and, in addition to the sinusoidal loading, work was carried out also for repetitive loading. In this way a possible sequence of loading by traffic was simulated. It was found that 18 cm thick slabs are adequate on roads carrying heavy loads, and that damage in the form of cracking in the slab cannot occur. There is also a sufficient reserve to allow for inaccuracies of manufacture as regards the thickness of the slab. In order to save building costs, the result of these laboratory tests should be tested on a stretch of road. (TRRL)
