Walking and Walkability: Shared National Goals in Public Health and Transportation
This article examines the goals and shared vision of two federal initiatives that promote walking in the United States: (1) Department of Health and Human Services' Step it Up! The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities and (2) Federal Highway Administration's Strategic Agenda for Pedestrian and Bicycle Transportation. Shared emphasis and potential opportunities for collaboration are highlighted including acknowledging all abilities, the importance of equity, designing for safety, encouraging supportive programs, education and training, and data gathering.
