Dynamic Traffic Assignment Using the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram: a Review

Dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) models are being increasingly incorporated into urban planning models in an effort to correctly predict dynamic network congestion under UE or SO objectives. On large cities computation times and calibration are major challenges faced by practitioners. The empirical evidence in 2008 that there exists a Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) on urban networks opened up a new paradigm, which makes it possible to formulate DTA models based on macroscopic dynamics of the network. Prior to 2008, a large body of DTA and also pedestrian flow models have utilized continuum space, based on the existence of a speed-density relationship that could be thought of as the MFD. In this paper, the authors review the literature at the intersection of DTA and macroscopic modeling of cities in an effort to understand the trends, challenges and potentials of this modeling framework.
