Main Factors Related to Immobility Among Elderly People

In our modern society, mobility is considered as a fundamental right and lack of mobility opportunities can lead to social exclusion and health issues. Immobility among the elderly is a major issue for planners and transportation agencies as it may reflect flaws in their urban policies and transportation strategies. Therefore, it is important to identify which factors are correlated to immobility of the elderly population, who often see their opportunities and needs to travel reduce as they change status, moving from an active life to retirement. The main objectives of this paper are to prioritize factors correlated with immobility and to assess the immobility evolution during a 5-year period. This paper addresses these issues mainly by using trip data from two Origin-Destination travel surveys conducted in the Montreal Region in 2008 and 2013. This data is fed into a decision tree model which provides the hierarchical organization of the factors impacting immobility; the two surveys also contribute to assessing how these factors have evolved over a 5-year period. Moreover, the decision tree model also outputs immobility profiles that are spatialized with an adjusted nearest neighbor hierarchical spatial cluster method to determine where the people belonging to each profile live and what the main features of their neighborhoods are. The results show that immobility among the elderly is correlated with ageing, the lack of access to a car, not being employed, and living in a low-income area and far from public transport.
