Assessment of Time-Varying Accessibility and Territorial Cohesion Using Time Distorted Maps: A Case Study Based of Public Transport Systems in the Region of Galicia (Spain)

Territories are articulated according to a hierarchical network of transport infrastructures. Design and layout of the transport networks depends on a number of physical and socio-economic factors. The levels of accessibility between settlements (or network nodes) are a clear indicator of the real degree of territorial cohesion. Traditional maps represent transport networks scaled in a geographical way, and hence can measure the actual distance between each node. However, real distances (in terms of travel times and accessibility) between nodes cannot effectively assessed. In this article, the authors propose a novel methodology to represent the real accessibility within a territory by distorting traditional maps depending on the time required for traveling from one point to another. For its implementation, Geographical Information Systems and interpolation methods are used. Different scenarios are considered depending on the schedule and public transport mode used between nodes, in addition to the consideration (or not) of the transfer time required. The case study shown here is carried out from a relatively dense point grid, which is made up of the most representative urban nodes of the region of Galicia, in the NW of Spain. Travel times are measured from a main node to the rest of nodes, considering always the most effective public transport mode in each case. Finally, different map solutions for each scenario are obtained.
