Rheological Modeling of Asphalt Binder Under Different Short- and Long-Term Aging Conditions

This paper evaluates whether a reduction in temperature, which is experienced in production techniques such as Warm-Mix-Asphalt, may be beneficial for the short- and long-term aging properties of asphalt binder. For this purpose, two 70/100 pen grade binders, which are part of the core materials used by the active RILEM committee CMB-252, were selected. The materials were artificially aged to six different conditions, first with the Rolling Thin Film Oven at three different temperatures (123ºC, 143ºC, and 163ºC), and then, with the Pressure Aging Vessel. Next, frequency and temperature sweep tests were conducted using the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) with three plate-plate geometries: 4mm, 8mm, and 25mm. Complex modulus and phase angle master curves were generated and the 2-Spring 2-Parabolic-element 1-Dashpot model was used to investigate the properties of the binders. The comparison of the results shows significant differences between 163ºC and 123ºC for short-term aging. This trend is confirmed by the model parameters and by the statistical analysis which, in addition, shows clear differences also for the long-term aging. Based on the present findings, upon consideration on DSR compliance (at low temperature for 4mm samples) and on a wider temperature range, it appears that a reduction in the temperature of the short-term aging, which is commonly associated with the mixture production process, may result in a substantially milder short- and long-term aging of the asphalt binder. The results show that a temperature reduction of 40°C during the production may be beneficial to the overall aging of the asphalt binder.
