Statewide Data Management Best Practices for Work Zone Information
The availability and accessibility of reliable work zone data are essential to support data needs of various work zone planning, safety, and operations applications. This paper summarizes the findings from a project under the Work Zone Data Management Best Practice project sponsored by the SWZ Deployment Initiative (SWZDI) pooled-fund. This project compiles work zone data management and application status from 22 states DOTs. This survey shows both the achievements agencies have made in quite a lot of aspects of work zone data management, and the existing challenges as well. Some states are leading in building and implementing advanced and modern work zone applications, and some states want to excel in this area but have other priority issues to address first. Nevertheless, states enthusiastically welcome the efforts in establishing a standard and uniform process to facilitate and streamline their work zone data management, especially at the federal or a state coalition level, and eager to learn from the successful practices of the national community.
